Escapism at Home: Decorex 2021

Design-Nation, a portfolio representing some of the UK’s most acclaimed designers and craftspeople, presents seven highly original designers at Decorex 2021, showing original and handmade work for interiors that celebrates escapism.

Everyone wants to escape to farflung exotic destinations in this post-pandemic world, yet sometimes the best destination of all is the sanctuary of home. Design-Nation’s singularly talented designer-makers explore this theme through one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces that are exotic, fantastical, playful, warming, hand-decorated and sumptuous.

The exhibitors, all based in England, reflect craft heritages though contemporary interpretation, working in diverse and highly skilled mediums: hand-weaving, metal-etching and inlaying, hand embroidery, slipcast porcelain, digital stitch and hand-painted tiles. Their resulting pieces will illuminate modern sanctuaries, bringing originality and magic to banish the outside world.

Escape with Us

Brand new and inspiring collections are on show: preview them on our film channel now. Five of our seven exhibiting designers are new to Decorex this year, and none have shown on Design-Nation’s stand at London Olympia before. New works include fine monochromatic wall-hangings by Liz Ramsay, vibrant observational embroidery by Susannah Weiland and Caroline Egleston’s colour-washed tile compositions, alive with gestural paint-strokes.

Rich textural and multi-hued details are provided by Amelia Ayerst’s striking digital embroidered panels and Majeda Clarke’s contemporary re-working of the classic Welsh blanket. The whole will be enhanced by Harriet Caslin’s curvaceous slipcast porcelain pendant lights, and the gleaming mysteries of Kim Sutherland’s expertly etched, inlaid and fine-fabricated metal artworks.

Kim Sutherland says, “Exploring the notion of sacred space, much of my work uses formal, underlying geometry as a contemplative focus.” Her embellished and meditative landscapes embody notions of an intimate and luxurious interior, somewhere to dream about and escape into.

Design-Nation Director Clare Edwards says, “Our designer-makers are extraordinary people, exemplifying the very best of craft innovation and design thinking, creating objects of beauty and utility for uncertain times. These objects in wool and steel, silk and porcelain, cotton and brass, are unique treasures that will bring joy, style and beauty to today’s contemporary refuges, our homes. As ever, Design-Nation is delighted to be a part of the special event that is Decorex and we remain grateful for the organisers’ continued support.”

Design-Nation is supported for Decorex 2021 by Raw Studio who are providing display furniture, and a generous grant from Arts Council England.
