Marek Pitera Ceramics

bonded to the place of making

Marek Pitera makes stoneware sculpture shaped by subconscious emergence before it resolves for him as emotion or idea. Each work functions as non-verbal communication, completed only through response. Tactility and interaction with light are central, creating an intuitive exchange. Rather than symbolism or narrative, the aim is to evoke resonance closer to impression than concept.

Marek’s process begins with liminal impressions captured in rapid drawings, then refined through coiling plastic clay. Form, colour, and contrast are reduced as a synergy. The fired surface is unglazed and polished, revealing the body and its message as directly and purely as possible.

Clay is central to Marek’s practice for its tension between will and serendipity, mirroring subconscious thought. London Clay sourced close to an Iron Age pottery site creates a bond to the place of making, not as nostalgia or historical reconstruction, but for the way it carries geological and human time simultaneously.
