Ceren Muftuoglu

repetition & disruption

Ceren Muftuoglu is a London-based textile artist whose practice explores repetition, rhythm, structure and disruption through hand-stitched cotton yarn on acrylic-painted canvas. With a background in fashion design, she combines digital planning with a slow, labour-intensive making process, constructing geometric compositions stitch by stitch.

Working between textile, painting and relief, Ceren uses thread not as embellishment but as a structural material. Repeated stitches build tactile surfaces that shift with light, distance and viewpoint, creating a dialogue between order and irregularity, precision and the presence of the hand. She is interested in how a structured system can gradually change through small shifts in density, direction and spacing, and how these subtle irregularities affect the way a surface is perceived.

Textile also carries a personal and cultural significance within Ceren’s practice. Drawing on a long familiarity with making, pattern and textile traditions, she explores how thread and repetitive hand processes can be recontextualised within contemporary abstraction. Her practice brings traditional textile processes into her own visual language, exploring how hand-making can engage with geometry, abstraction and materiality while extending the possibilities of thread within contemporary art and craft.
