Phil Berczuk’s creative practice sits at the intersection of the natural and the constructed. His work is inspired by organic forms, raw materials and elemental processes, as well as the geometry and texture of the built environment. He transforms these influences into singular pieces of hand crafted, sculptural furniture.
Phil’s background spans fine art, design and making. Precise, interlocking structures sit alongside forms derived from natural processes of growth and transformation. Material history is considered as active content rather than backdrop to the works: using sub-fossilised timbers, layering, staining and unplanned process inconsistencies as records of time and making. HIs most recent works are built from cold-formed, micro-laminated veneers, with forms resolved through iterative physical shaping using hand tools. Sustainability runs through the choice of FSC-certified and reclaimed materials.
Phil completed an MA and BA(Hons) in Fine Art in the 1980s and was awarded the Cheltenham Fellowship in 1986, going on to practice as an artist for over a decade. he later established an award-winning, international design practice before stepping down to return to hands-on making in 2023. Phil then spent a year training with furniture designer Marc Fish at Robinson House Studio in East Sussex, graduating with Distinction in 2025. Phil is based in north London where he continues to explore form, craft and materiality through wood as his preferred creative medium.
Phil Berczuk joined Design-Nation in 2026.
