Bekky May

hands in the earth

Over the past decade, Bekky May has developed a ceramic process using organic forms which she instinctively sculpts from a solid piece of clay. She makes collections of plaster moulds from these forms and slip-casts with hues of coloured porcelain slip.

Discovering the concept of biophilia, which relates to our intrinsic connection with the natural world, Bekky began creating asymmetrical vessels, as found in nature. Working at the leather-hard stage on her vessels allows her to carve designs into the surface of the clay and inlaying these with contrasting coloured slip using the Japanese technique of Mishima.

With a past career as a landscape gardener, Bekky has always enjoyed getting her hands in the earth. Over the years she has found that being a ceramic artist is not only about creating but also about how the practice itself, as well as the ceramic vessels themselves, makes her feel – calm and grounded.

Bekky May initially joined Design-Nation as a graduate in 2022 and moved up to Professional membership in 2025.
