An exciting contemporary British sculptor, Zoë Wilson specialises in hand carving complex geometric patterns in British stone. Trained as a stonemason and letter carver, Zoë completed a diploma in Historic Stone Carving at City and Guilds of London Art School. Whilst living abroad, she was captivated by Islamic art and sacred geometry, and this inspired her transition from restoration carving to carved geometric patterns.
Zoë’s work not only documents her understanding of geometry but also showcases her ability to breathe life into static objects and manipulate shadow. Intricate patterns emerge due to the remarkable precision in the execution of her craft. Employing traditional techniques, Zoë continually pushes the boundaries of her abilities. Exclusively carving British stone, she feels a profound connection with the material and process. For Zoë, carving is a meditative and calming practice, a sentiment she conveys through the precision and balance evident in her timeless sculptures.
Zoë says, “In my practice, communication through pattern serves as a conduit for expressing intricate narratives and concepts. Embracing the beauty inherent in slow, traditional practices, I find solace in the luxury of time, allowing for deep exploration and refinement. The permanence of decisions, coupled with the inability to undo mistakes, underlines a commitment to intentionality and authenticity. Through manipulation of light and shadow, static objects come alive, imbued with a sense of movement and dynamism. Moreover, I seek to infuse traditionally masculine materials with a feminine aesthetic, challenging conventions and expanding perceptions of form and expression.”
