The designs for Katie Watson’s work as a silversmith starts with a walk through woodlands, along the coast and across mountains. She walks mainly around her hometown of North Berwick or the Isle of Arran in Scotland. On these adventures Katie draws and studies anything that captures her attention in detail, and then creates a design built on her drawings and enriched by her imagination.
Using silver as a canvas, Katie translates her drawings on to the metal surface using chasing and repoussé, and produces wonderlands of nature in unique pieces of jewellery and silverware. Her work transports viewers on a journey outdoors, immersed in nature and surrounded by wildlife. She brings scenes to life by conveying a sense of movement within each piece, from the interweaving flow of water ripples, wild grasses swaying in the wind and birds soaring high.
Katie says. ” In my creative practice, imagination and intricacy take center stage as I craft miniature landscapes packed with meticulous details. In my signature style of chasing I use variously shaped chasing tools, each rhythmically tapped with a hammer, to make various textures, patterns, and depths within my creations based around illustrating nature. Whether making functional pieces, or sculptural and decorative works, silver is my chosen medium, allowing me to express a diverse range of forms and functions.”
