Joanna Terry is a ceramicist based in rural Ears Sussex. She works predominately in Parian Porcelain, making pieces in a visceral reaction to nature’s continuous renewal.
Joanna observes nature carefully through her daily walking, a meditative experience that connects her directly with the earth. This daily ritual is often the starting point of each new collection, as she gathers found pieces of wood or stones, and notes the changes to the season.
Preferring to cast clay directly out of doors, Joanna’s approach helps to minimise her impact on these often fragile landscapes. Casting bark, grasses and native plants that are sometimes only revealed at low tides, her soft imprints give a pure impression of the landscape she loves. When taken back to the studio, Joanna’s soft imprints are transformed into delicately textured vessels that reference the seasonal shifts and rich bio-diversity of this beautiful county she inhabits. Joanna’s fragile porcelain forms are fired free of setters, to encourage the natural twist and turn in the high firing process.
Through her process of making and with the addition of light, Joanna hopes each piece she creates will bring the native beauty of the moments she treasures while in moving through fragile lands.
