Denise Coupland is a textile artist with a passion for mark-making, hand-stitch, and natural dyes. Originally from the Lake District, she developed a deep love for the outdoors and the natural environment. This enduring connection to nature and landscape remains a continual source of inspiration for Denise.
Denise’s practice centres on a technique known as silk/fibre paper making, or silk fusion. She fuses naturally dyed fibres to create a delicate, paper-like ground material, which becomes the foundation for her intricate hand stitching. The artwork she creates has a delicate, ethereal quality that invites you to explore and discover the intricate stitch detail.
Each piece tells its own unique story. Denise’s making process is slow and considered, from foraging and preparing natural dyes to the meticulous rhythm of hand stitching. Irregularities in the stitch work are embraced rather than concealed, reflecting the organic qualities of both the materials and the landscapes that inspire her.
Denise joined Design-Nation as a Graduate in 2022 and became a Professional member in 2025.
