Design-Nation Showcase and Residencies for Hatch’19
The work of fourteen of our maker members has gone on display at The National Centre for Craft & Design (NCCD) as part of Hatch’19, an interactive ‘live’ exhibition project celebrating and exploring the art school experience. The curated showcase features experimental pieces and work in development through the careers of Design-Nation members, alongside examples of their current work.
Case study films and text panels tell the story of their journey through creative education, both as students and in some cases as tutors and lecturers. Visitors can find out where and what the exhibitors studied and how their art school experiences have inspired or informed their future work.
The showcase features textiles by Anna Gravelle, Laura Mabbutt, Maria Sigma and Nicki Jarvis, ceramics by Linda Southwell and Inner Finn, and jewellery by Kate Bajic and Jane Sedgwick. Stuart Akroyd’s glass totems sit alongside a concrete stool designed and made by Raw Studio. Mixed media pieces by Charlie Birtles and Kathleen Smith, works in metal by Emma-Jane Rule and Lucy Grainge’s screenprints complete this fascinating insight into the work of some of DN’s most inspirational members.
Alongside this display, Hatch’19 includes a lively Artist in Residence programme with different artists working in the gallery every week. Four Design-Nation members are involved: Laura Mabbutt and Kathleen Smith are in residence jointly from 26 July to 1 August, bringing their “Making Up Your Street” project to NCCD. From 12-18 August Charlie Birtles will explore new thatching techniques for a large site-specific sculpture using materials linked to NCCD. Visitors to Nicki Jarvis’s residency from 22-28 August will be able to have a go at traditional quilt making and create a patch to add to a new large-scale patchwork.
Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page over the coming weeks as we share case studies and updates from our Hatch participants.
