Susi Hines is inspired by growth and transformation in nature, expressed through her unique visual language of pattern and rhythm. She always starts with a visual concept which then develops through observational drawing and model-making.
Susi’s handmade pieces of jewellery highlight pattern, eroded surfaces and movement, combining ethically sourced gold and silver with breath-taking gemstones. She creates a palette of different coloured golds by smelting her own recycled alloys. This subtle gradation of colour is built up over a surface, allowing each unit to articulate independently and catch the light to create movement.
Susi etches metals to create strong, contrasting surfaces, and is currently experimenting with new soldering techniques, for example PUK welding. She strives to refine her jewellery, incorporating modern technology, as well as valuing and putting at the centre of her practice traditional fine jewellery hand-making techniques.
