Julie Massie

an emphasis on tactile

Julie Massie is a ceramicist creating wall-hung work from stained shards of porcelain clay. Her work has an emphasis on tactile edges, as she hopes to create a desire for the observer to touch the artwork – something that we have been brought up not to do in a gallery setting. Julie lives in Bournemouth and lectures in fine art at Bournemouth and Poole College as well as creating work in her own studio.

Julie takes her inspiration for her artwork from the Jurassic Coastline which is a beautiful, interesting and internationally important place because of its fragility. The sea’s strong and destructive waves are the primary shapers of this coastline, and usually occur in the winter when the sea is cold and grey, intermingled with blues and greens. These colours and the fragility of this coast are both reflected within Julie’s final outcomes.

Joining Design-Nation as an Associate in 2021, Julie has now moved up to Professional membership.
