Qi Fang Colbert is an international artist, ceramicist, illustrator, and researcher based in Northumberland. She specialises in hand-built, high-fire stoneware, and uses techniques such as free-hand carving, inlaying original narrative drawings, and sgraffito. Her fine art ceramics engage with a variety of themes, including social transformation, nature, and feminism. Her works celebrate narrative imagery that transcends mere surface decoration, becoming instead a vital and integrated component of the ceramic pieces.
Instead of pursuing uniformity and certainty, Qi Fang’s ceramics invite alternative interpretations, fostering curiosity about the unknown, the unconventional, and the asymmetrical. Her practice stimulates dialogue and interaction between the objects and her carefully carved illustrations, which draw deeply from the philosophies of Taoism and Phenomenology.
Eschewing a rigid blueprint, Qi Fang carves freehand on each piece. Much like a spreading vine, her expressive images shape the objects themselves, establishing outlines and content that capture her imagined narratives, stories, and emotions through a stream of consciousness.
