Ceramic sculptor Kathryn Stevens makes forms influenced by technical drawings known as lofting plans, and used in the ship and boat building industries. These sculptures create a theme of work inspired by Cumbria’s natural and industrial landscape. Connecting with the viewer to tell a personal story of belonging, of the people and natural assets, the narrative of the place where Kathryn has lived since birth – this is the inspiration behind her work.
Formulating her own clay body and glaze recipes, Kathryn uses local raw materials and industrial waste, materials than evidence the area’s geological formation, helping to cement her work in the field of narrative ceramics.
Kathryn works from her home studio in Barrow-In-Furness, having gained her MA Ceramics at UCLAN. She received the Ophelia Gordon Bell Award in 2022 and was longlisted for the Visual Art Open UK & International Emerging Artist Prize 2023 and Aesthetica Art Prize 2024.
Kathryn initially joined Design-Nation as a Graduate in 2023, becoming a Professional member in 2026.
