As a ceramic artist, Josefina Isaza is highly conscious of her spatial environment in relation to her material, and often immerses herself in its meditative qualities. The same qualities are in turn conveyed in the work, creating a highly visual and tactile surface informed by her love for nature and fine detail. Josefina intends to provoke multiple sensory modalities, and thus spark a curiosity in the viewer. Her work demonstrates how visual stimuli can be achieved by grouping single elements to form a larger gestalt whole.
Josefina’s work is composed of miniature constituent pieces, parts gathered meticulously to form an almost subconscious outcome. Each tiny hair-like spike is crafted individually using a coiling method, and then methodically attached one by one. Josefina’s practice is intuitive; the creations of the sculptures are impulsive but decisive, which allows the work to morph between concave volumes and convex planes. A landscape and narrative emerges in the process of formation; surface, depth and texture are achieved with oxides, and volcanic glazes applied in layers; Josefina then fires these pieces multiple times until the desired outcome is achieved.
Colombian-born Josefina studied at The University Of The Arts, Philadelphia and undertook residencies there and in Japan before her move to London. She became a Professional member of Design-Nation in 2026.
