Katherine Staples makes ceramic sculptures with an emphasis on form. Her work is inspired by the natural world, and she aims to capture nature’s energy and movement in the material of clay. Katherine’s work is hand-built using traditional pinching and coiling techniques, to create individual, bespoke, contemporary forms.
Clay is pushed to its limits by Katherine, both in terms of its strength and its fragility. She creates organic shapes that are always self-supporting and that can be displayed from several angles, even when created in large scale. Yet even her larger pieces have a feeling of fragility about them, especially as they taper towards the outside edges.
Katherine makes ceramic sculptures both for individual commissions, and for galleries and outdoor sculpture parks.
