Glenice Hoffmann creates abstract sculptural pieces. Her individual decorative forms are hand-built in stoneware clay by slabbing, coiling or pinching, and she allows time and space during the making process for the further development of her ideas.
Initially referencing, for example, the striking lines of Hans Coper, James Oughtibridge and Barbara Hepworth, Glenice’s work is influenced by her study of art history, in particular the journey from realism underway in Italy in the fifteenth century, to abstraction reached at the beginning of the twentieth century by Franz Marc, Mondrian and Kandinsky. Glenice’s neat, tactile pieces reflect their use of sharp shapes and clear linear qualities.
In the line of her pieces, Glenice searches for the power of simplicity and sharpness which exists in geometric elements. She focuses on the striking outlines of the circle, angle, straight line and curve, while also exploring negative and positive space. These shapes and sizes appear to change as one moves around them, inviting the viewer to touch, lift and rearrange in different settings and lights. In the design and in the making process, Glenice considers energy, tension and movement while seeking a sense of balance, harmony and calm. To finish her works, she burnishes, textures or smoke-fires, then either wax polishes or leaves the surface naked, all to achieve a natural, tactile finish.
Glenice joined Design-Nation as an Associate in 2024 and moved up to Professional membership in March 2o25.
