Anna Smyth is a ceramicist working from her studio in County Down, Northern Ireland. Her award winning porcelain vessels are her voice; a language in clay. Drawing inspiration from life experiences and observation she explores themes such as spirituality, heritage and nature. Anna enjoys being fully engaged with each stage of making from design to final firing, seeking to imbue meaning into each piece.
Beginning her sculptural vessels on the potter’s wheel Anna alters and adds detail, then, utilising her passion for glaze alchemy, completes each piece with crystalline glazes. During the firing, fascinating crystals form spontaneously, adding a unique, mesmerising layer of interest to each piece. These vessels are often in groups connected by profile or contour; enjoying being together in conversation.
Anna believes that when we engage with that which has been thoughtfully designed and skillfully made by the human hand, it is an important, valuable, and enriching experience.
