Elaine Lim-Newton is a Derby based ceramic artist whose contemporary sculptural works draw inspiration from the combining of organic forms, architectural structures and her dual British and East Asian heritage. Her practice is guided by the interplay of organic flow and deliberate form, finding harmony between instinct and design.
Elaine’s methods of construction include the handbuilding techniques of coiling, slabbing, and modelling with a variety of stoneware, coloured and porcelain clays. Each piece has individually formed elements meticulously applied to create intricate compositions that suggest rhythm and flow. A combination of bold, glossy, and matte glazes are used to enhance texture and invite tactility in each sculpture.
Elaine’s practice extends beyond the studio through public art commissions for hospitals and civic spaces, as well as regular exhibitions and gallery projects across the UK. Alongside her own practice, she is committed to arts education, leading workshops, residencies, and community projects that encourage creative exploration through clay
