Debbie’s work explores the passage of time through the medium of slab-built ceramic sculptures and vessels. Rooted in a deep fascination with history, architecture, and pattern, she draws inspiration from the ornamental language of stonework. Tessellating shapes, and geometric motifs appear throughout her pieces as echoes of the past, the symbols of human endeavour, belief, and aesthetic harmony.
Each form is constructed by hand, using slabs of clay shaped and carved to evoke the textures of eroded stone, worn masonry, or ancient carved surfaces. She incorporates dried, crumbled clay particles to create tactile depth, while sprigs, tiles, and relief elements form layered patterns across the surface, mirroring the rhythmic repetition found in historic buildings and sacred architecture.
Through these sculptures, Debbie invites the viewer to reflect on time, memory, and place. Whether it sparks the memory of a distant place or simply the joy of intricate pattern and form, her hope is to offer a sense of harmony and connection to the enduring human impulse to create.
