Melissa Montague

My practice is concerned with exploring traditional silversmithing techniques such as hammer raising and forging to create a range of vessels and spons that can be used or simply enjoyed. I explore the relationship between people and artefacts through my work using function, scale and intrigue to establish a lasting connection. My pieces are created predominantly from silver, copper and brass along with a variety of woods. I use hammer marks and oxidisation to create different surface textures and visual interest. Some of my larger work has a more functional focus, whereas the smaller pieces are beginning to explore affordances to initiate a conversation.
