Kerry Hastings is a ceramicist who makes sculptures that do not conform to strict geometric logic, emerging instead with a natural rhythm—fluid, intuitive, and inherently organic. Anthropomorphic in nature, her work evokes the human body and its unspoken, embodied language.
Working intuitively with her clay, Kerry uses pinch and coil techniques, stretching and pushing the clay out and guiding it in again, until the forms begin to develop their own dynamic and a certain trajectory is suggested. What starts out as something personal to Kerry inevitably becomes quite universal; she says, “It becomes just something very human”. The bulges and hollows of her forms develop a psychological and emotional resonance, an organic familiarity and sense of natural balance; artworks with a presence that one can relate to.
