Jane’s ceramic sculptures possess a strong voice, and a bold narrative about contrast, visual drama and playfulness.
Through her work, Jane explores aspects of her sense of self, in particular her need to feel in control in a world which is increasingly unpredictable and chaotic. She sees the same contradiction mirrored on social media, where many of us present a fiction: a curated, controlled and idealised version of our lives, rather than the often challenging and capricious nature of existence. Jane explores these contradictions through her work, in which form, line, texture and colour act as metaphors.
Jane aims for sculptural tension between states of messiness and the uncontrolled, and the tidy and ordered – the two states co-habiting dynamically in each object to achieve exciting contrasts. The work is process-driven. Jane works slowly and carefully with earthenware clay, hand-building, constructing or throwing some elements, combining this with looser handling. Surface treatments include dark glazes offset by vivid acrylic colour. Jane obtained her MA in Ceramics from Bath Spa University in 2012. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, shortlisted for several UK and international awards, and is held in public and private collections in the UK, Europe and USA.
