Hanny Newton Embroidery

movement and memory

Hanny Newton is a hand embroidery artist who seeks to find her own personal response to the traditional art form of goldwork. Since studying at the Royal School of Needlework (2011 – 2013) she has become interested in the inherent qualities of different metal threads – the way threads interact with light, and the subtle differences in movement and memory.

Hanny loves to explore combinations of earthy, natural fabrics and vibrant metals to add to the contrast of her pieces. She works with metal threads from the UK’s last remaining metal thread manufacturers, who spin metal threads using methods that have barely changed for centuries.

Hanny creates her pieces from her studio in Shropshire and works with designers to apply her contemporary approach to metal thread work to larger scale projects for hotel and private residencies around the globe. She also loves to share her passion for her contemporary approach to goldwork. Hanny has taught internationally, including The British Museum, West Dean College, and the Australian Design Centre in Sydney.
