Elaine King’s practice is rooted in a deep, observational dialogue with the English landscape, specifically the woodlands of Dorset and the Cornish coastline. Drawing on her degree training at Camberwell School of Art, she creates hand-built sculptural and functional stoneware pieces that prioritise texture, balance, and complexity. Using white stoneware clay, Elaine employs torn and altered slabs to mirror the organic irregularities of silver birch bark and forest floors.
Elaine’s work contributes to contemporary craft through a sophisticated exploration of vibrant colour and intricate surface pattern. By layering hand-painted oxides and slips, she translates the powerful colours of the botanical world into permanent ceramic forms. This approach pushes the development of contemporary design, by blurring the line between fine art painting and three-dimensional craft.
Elaine demonstrates how traditional hand-building can evolve into a modern, expressive medium where surface narrative and structural form are inextricably linked.
Elaine joined Design-Nation as an Associate member in 2024, moving up to Professional in 2026.
