Claire Ireland is a dedicated hand builder and revels in how ideas develop out of the process of making and experimenting with materials and techniques.
She produces elegant hand-built sculptural forms on different scales. They are collectable objects, ceramic assemblages, inspired by her studio’s location, in the grounds of a historical steam museum in London. Absorbing the industrial heritage surrounding her, has been a significant element when developing ideas. The discipline of drawing, and her continuous sketchbook studies and a renewed passion for print making are of prime importance to her and are essential components in her making process.
Her working practice as a ceramic sculptor is changing and is drawn to a more minimal and reductive strategy, simplifying structures, but constantly enhancing and developing the surface.
Her latest project is a book commissioned by The Crowood Press on “Surface Decoration for Ceramics” published January 2023
