Birgit Pohl Ceramics

precision of form & fluidity

Birgit Pohl makes functional and decorative wheel-thrown pots in porcelain that explore the balance between precision of form and fluidity in the surface decoration.

Most of Birgit’s pieces are decorated in her signature style, with ceramic pencil and underglaze colours; all work is then high-fired with a glossy transparent glaze in an electric kiln. These decorations are based on ‘automatic drawings’ which hold a mixture of different influences which come to the fore during time Birgit spends with her sketchbook. She aims to create pieces that are pleasing to hold and invite speculation about the stories behind the designs.

Birgit studied at Clay College, Stoke-on-Trent. Her work has been exhibited at various locations, including Art in Clay Farnham, Potfest Compton Verney and the British Ceramics Biennial.

Birgit joined Design-Nation as a Professional member in 2026.
