Llio James is a contemporary hand weaver who encompasses traditional design in today’s language. One of her main interests is in developing the relationship between hand-weaving and the woollen industry within Wales. Provenance and the feeling of belonging to country and culture is important to her, and one way of expressing this is through her work.
Working from her studio in Cardiff, Llio works on a traditional dobby loom developing design ideas and weave structures, all sourced from her interest in traditional textiles. She experiments with colour, shape and pattern, living with the cloth to see how it works in day-to-day spaces before developing her design choice.
Llio collaborates with a mill in Wales to weave cloth for interiors. Her selected hand woven designs are developed following discussions with the mill and taken forward into production. She also hand-weaves bespoke cloth for interiors. As a hand weaver Llio is able to adapt the work as it grows, using her hands and eyes to build a contemporary cloth, but more importantly she hand-weaves cloth to be handled, to be used and to be loved, generation after generation.
