Anne McKenzie Botanic Calligraphic Art

exploring light through colour

Anne McKenzie creates one-off banners which explore timeless calligraphic techniques and botanic subjects, using pigments that she mixes herself on a variety of handmade Japanese papers. Anne is inspired by ideas of painting as meditation and the emotional resonance of colour, using brushstrokes that are “spontaneous yet highly conscious”.

Anne studied fine art at Rhodes University in South Africa and later investigated Japanese calligraphy. She has been developing ideas around light through colour for over five years, experimenting with different materials, before settling on Japanese kozo paper. Kozo is traditionally use for shoji screens and lights, and has many positive qualities, being strong, light, flexible and environmentally more harmonious.

Anne brings a contemporary approach to her joyous mark-making, in keeping with her deep appreciation and awareness of the beauty of trees and plants, with weekly trips to paint from life at Kew Gardens. Her resultant banners bring individual and seasonal style, adding serenity to interiors.
