Introducing new talent #summerofdesign

With the 2016 London Design Festival happening across the London this week Design Nation brings to you a series of blogs and highlights from across the festival together with news from our members from across the UK.

Design Nation plays a prestigious part in the Design calendar each summer. We start by sponsoring One Year On with New Designers and end our summer of Design with our prestigious members showcase at Decorex.

Before we head to the capital however and visit our members at Decorex, our second #summerofdesign blog follows one of our ‘New Designers 2016’ winners, the ceramicist and printmaker Hannah Tounsend.

Hannah won the prize back in July and since then she has been growing her business and raising her profile as a designer, maker and artist.
‘Exhibiting at New Designers was a very valuable experience’ explains Hannah. ‘It resulted in sales and a new range of opportunities. Winning the One Year On award greatly raised my profile and gave me the opportunity to work towards the challenge of creating My solo show in 2017 with the National Centre for Craft and Design’.

Hannah was awarded the prize for her vessels that bridged sculpture and markmaking which is often inspired by the coastal landscapes from across the UK.  Hannah is becoming recognized as one of the freshest talents to emerge from the ND One Year On exhibition within recent years with her statement ceramics and large scale prints.

Earlier in 2016 she held residency at the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Centre in Denmark. The residency supported Hannah’s creative thinking and craftsmanship in the creation of her ‘Hybrid Vessels’. Today Hannah is midway through her commission piece for next years Ceramic Biennial.

Hannah is currently working as part of the Southern cohort of the Crafts Councils Hothouse scheme and will eventually lead to the opening of a new multi discipline exhibition opening in November of this year. Hannah is aiming high and is wanting to collaborate more with architects and speciefiers as she creates larger scale ceramics a new prints in watercolours for public spaces and interiors.
